The birthright and its double portion were the ancient world's greatest inheritance; for Esau to relinquish it without complaint, honouring a bargain he had made, was a striking act of restraint and integrity.

And Esau said, 'I have sold to Jacob and given my birthright to Jacob; to him let it be given, and I have not a single word to say regarding it, for it is his.'

Offered the larger portion, Esau honours his old agreement — the birthright is Jacob's — and gives his father rest by taking no grievance.
