Given by: Pharaoh, marvelling at Joseph, in the book's retelling of Genesis dictated to Moses on Sinai by the angel of the presence. Given to: his servants — and through the telling, to all who watch a godly life at work.

Egyptian kings surrounded themselves with magicians and interpreters of dreams; that Pharaoh set them aside and named the Hebrew slave's God as the source of wisdom was a striking public acknowledgement.

And the Lord gave Joseph favour and mercy in the eyes of Pharaoh, and Pharaoh said unto his servants. We shall not find such a wise and discreet man as this man, for the spirit of the Lord is with him.'

Even a pagan king recognises the source of Joseph's wisdom — the Spirit of the Lord — teaching that true discernment is God's gift, visible to all.
