By the code of the age, Joseph's power made vengeance not only possible but expected; his tears and comfort toward those who had sold him into slavery overturned every ordinary expectation of a wronged lord.

And he conversed with them in the Hebrew tongue and fell on their neck and wept. But they knew him not and they began to weep. And he said unto them: 'Weep not over me, but hasten and bring my father to me; and ye see that it is my mouth that speaketh and the eyes of my brother Benjamin see.

Joseph forgives his brothers wholly and tenderly — no reproach, no revenge, but tears, embrace, comfort, and a turning at once to restored family duty.
