The patriarchs marked pivotal moments with altars and sacrifices at sacred sites; the Well of the Oath (Beersheba) was bound up with God's covenant to Abraham and Isaac, a fitting place to seek Him before leaving the land.

And Israel took his journey from Haran from his house on the new moon of the third month, and he went on the way of the Well of the Oath, and he offered a sacrifice to the God of his father Isaac on the seventh of this month.

Setting out on the momentous journey to Egypt, Jacob first offers a sacrifice to the God of his fathers — beginning a great undertaking with worship.
