Burial with one's fathers in the ancestral tomb was a sacred obligation in the ancient world; carrying the bones to the double cave at Hebron through a land at war was an act of costly devotion to family and to God's promise.

And the king of Egypt went forth to war with the king of Canaan in the forty-seventh jubilee, in the second week in the second year, and the children of Israel brought forth all the bones of the children of Jacob save the bones of Joseph, and they buried them in the field in the double cave in the mountain.

Amid war between Egypt and Canaan, Israel seizes the chance to carry the bones of Jacob's sons home and bury them with the fathers in the double cave.
