Given by: the angel of the presence to Moses on Mount Sinai, within the closing sabbath code. Given to: Moses, for Israel — interpreting the day's meaning before its final rules are given: this is honour bestowed by the Lord.

Greek and Roman writers sneered at the Jewish sabbath as laziness; Jubilees answers the sneer head-on — the day is not idleness but conferred honour, a weekly feast marking Israel as a people the Lord delights to satisfy.

For great is the honour which the Lord has given to Israel that they should eat and drink and be satisfied on this festival day, and rest thereon from all labour which belongs to the labour of the children of men save burning frankincense and bringing oblations and sacrifices before the Lord for days and for Sabbaths.

The sabbath reframed: it is a great honour the Lord has given — to eat, drink, be satisfied and rest — not a restriction to be endured.
