Written to Jews under intense Hellenistic pressure to adopt Greek customs and festivals, the book warns that neglecting Israel's own sacred order would mean sliding, almost unawares, into the rhythms and errors of the surrounding nations.

But if they do neglect and do not observe them according to His commandment, then they will disturb all their seasons and the years will be dislodged from this (order), and they will disturb the seasons and the years will be dislodged and they will neglect their ordinances.

A warning: neglect God's ordering and everything is thrown into disorder — the holy confounded with the common when the surrounding culture is left to set the rhythms of life.
