Given by: the angel of the presence to Moses on Sinai, recounting the covenant the Lord swore to Noah. Given to: Israel, taught that the very rhythm of the seasons is a standing pledge of God's faithfulness.

For ancient farmers whose lives hung on the reliability of the rains and seasons, a divine oath that the natural order would never fail was profound assurance against the dread of famine and cosmic chaos.

And the Lord smelt the goodly savour, and He made a covenant with him that there should not be any more a flood to destroy the earth; that all the days of the earth seed-time and harvest should never cease; cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night should not change their order, nor cease for ever.

God binds Himself by covenant: no more flood, and seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, day and night will never cease — a settled order the faithful can rest upon.
