In the ancient world a father's honour was sacred and his shame a family matter; to expose it was a grave dishonour, while to cover it — even at the cost of walking backward not to look — was the deepest filial respect.

And Shem took his garment and arose, he and Japheth, and they placed the garment on their shoulders and went backward and covered the shame of their father, and their faces were backward.

Where one son exposed his father's disgrace, Shem and Japheth cover it — walking backward with averted faces, honouring rather than gloating over a parent's shame.
