Under a persecution that made keeping the law a capital crime, many hid or conformed; Mathathias called the zealous to stand up openly and maintain the covenant of their fathers.

And Mathathias cried out in the city with a loud voice, saying: Every one that hath zeal for the law, and maintaineth the testament, let him follow me.

Mathathias calls all who are zealous for God's law and covenant to take their stand openly.
