Given by: the narrative of 1 Maccabees, describing the people's thanksgiving. Given to: the delivered people — a pattern for every believer who has known God's help.

Israel's psalms of thanksgiving proclaimed that God's mercy endures for ever; the delivered people take up that refrain, crediting God rather than their own arms.

And returning home they sung a hymn, and blessed God in heaven, because he is good, because his mercy endureth for ever.

After deliverance, the people return home singing and blessing God, because He is good and His mercy endures for ever.
