'He that overcometh' (Greek nikao) was vivid language in cities that prized athletic and military victory; Christ redefines conquest as faithful endurance to the end.

And he that overcometh, and keepeth my works unto the end, to him will I give power over the nations:

Christ defines overcoming: he that overcometh, and keepeth my works unto the end — to him power over the nations. The seven letters attach every promise (tree of life 2:7; no second death 2:11; hidden manna 2:17; white garments 3:5; pillar 3:12; throne 3:21) to this condition.
