In the second-temple liturgy, the priestly blessing was met by the whole congregation prostrating themselves in adoration — a bodily, corporate act of reverence before the God dwelling among His people.

Then all the people together made haste, and fell down to the earth upon their faces, to adore the Lord their God, and to pray to the Almighty God the most High.

As the high priest ministered, all the people hastened to fall on their faces to adore and pray to the Almighty God the most High.
