For diaspora Jews, dietary fidelity was a visible boundary marker of covenant identity; to keep it was to remain distinct amid a pagan majority pressing toward conformity.

(When all ate of the meats of the Gentiles) he kept his soul and never was defiled with their meats.

Guard yourself from what conscience and God's law forbid, refusing to be defiled even when everyone around you partakes.
