In the diaspora, corporal works of mercy — feeding, clothing, burying — were the tangible substance of covenant righteousness where Temple sacrifice was out of reach.

He fed the hungry, and gave clothes to the naked, and was careful to bury the dead, and they that were slain.

Give food to the hungry, meeting the most basic bodily need of those who lack it.
