Narrated as Tobit's example. Setting: among his works of mercy Tobit was careful to bury the dead and the slain; the following verses (cf. 1:21) show him burying the slain even under the wrath of King Sennacherib, at real peril.

Reverent burial was a sacred obligation in Israel; to leave the dead unburied was a profound dishonour, and to bury the slain against a tyrant's will was both mercy and defiance at real cost.

He fed the hungry, and gave clothes to the naked, and was careful to bury the dead, and they that were slain.

Take care to bury the dead with reverence, even the slain, and even when it costs you danger.
