Given by: the elder Tobit, at the moment his sight is restored. Given to: God, as a modelled prayer of blessing that receives both chastening and rescue, to be imitated.

Israel's piety held that God chastens those He loves; for a diaspora bearing exile, blindness, and loss, blessing God through both suffering and rescue was the very shape of enduring faith.

And Tobias said: I bless thee, O Lord God of Israel, because thou hast chastised me, and thou hast saved me: and behold I see Tobias my son.

Bless God for both His chastening and His saving, receiving the whole of His dealings as good.
