In Israel the handing on of the faith to one's children was a central covenant duty — to teach them diligently so that the knowledge and worship of God would not be lost in exile.

And command your children that they do justice and almsdeeds, and that they be mindful of God, and bless him at all times in truth, and with all their power.

Command your own children to do justice and give alms, to be mindful of God, and to bless Him always, truly and with all their strength.
