In the diaspora, a scattered and powerless people had almsgiving and burial of the dead as their most tangible acts of covenant faithfulness — righteousness expressed where the Temple could not be reached.

Give alms out of thy substance, and turn not away thy face from any poor person: for so it shall come to pass that the face of the Lord shall not be turned from thee.

Give alms from what you have and never turn your face from the poor, for as you regard them God will regard you.
