Given by: Tobias, on his wedding night. Given to: his bride Sara, whom he calls to prayer before they come together.

Sara had already lost seven husbands to the demon on their wedding nights; against that terror, Tobias models exilic piety — that even the marriage bed is entered under God's protection, sanctified by prayer rather than presumed upon.

Then Tobias exhorted the virgin, and said to her: Sara, arise, and let us pray to God today, and tomorrow, and the next day: because for these three nights we are joined to God: and when the third night is over, we will be in our own wedlock.

Begin marriage on your knees in prayer, not as those who know not God, so that the union is joined first to God.
