Given by: Judas Maccabeus and the people, seeking God together before a grave danger. Given to: every believer who would face a trial rightly — beginning on their knees.

In Israel's faith, fasting and prostration were the language of urgent, humble prayer — a whole people casting itself on God's mercy before daring to face what lay ahead.

So when they had all done this together, and had craved mercy of the Lord with weeping and fasting, lying prostrate on the ground for three days continually, Judas exhorted them to make themselves ready.

Before acting, seek the Lord's mercy earnestly — with weeping, fasting, and prostrate prayer.
