Given by: Onias, the departed high priest, in a vision naming Jeremias — reverenced as a saint in glory who prays much for the people. Given to: Judas Maccabeus and, through the account, all God's people.

For Catholic and Orthodox believers this passage witnesses to the communion of saints: those who have died in God's grace remain bound in love to His people and intercede for them before Him.

Then Onias answering, said: This is a lover of his brethren, and of the people of Israel: this is he that prayeth much for the people, and for all the holy city, Jeremias the prophet of God.

The prophet Jeremias, in glory, is a lover of his people who prays much for them and the holy city.
