Given by: the narrator, describing how Judas Maccabeus's people acted and prayed at once. Given to: every believer who would unite honest effort with a praying heart.

The account holds together two things easily set apart — wholehearted effort and continual prayer — showing a people who neither trusted their hands alone nor waited idly, but leaned on God while they laboured.

So fighting with their hands, but praying to the Lord with their hearts, they slew no less than five and thirty thousand, being greatly cheered with the presence of God.

Labour with your hands while your heart prays to the Lord, cheered by the presence of God.
