In a world of swift retribution, the book teaches that God's merciful way of judging trains His people to be just and humane and to live in good hope of His forgiveness.

But thou hast taught thy people by such works, that they must be just and humane, and hast made thy children to be of a good hope: because in judging thou givest place for repentance for sins.

God's merciful dealings teach His people to be just and humane, and give them good hope, because in judging He gives place for repentance.
