Against a world that expected the gods to punish swiftly and finally, the book presents God as correcting gradually and with admonition, seeking the sinner's repentance and faith.

And therefore thou chastisest them that err, by little and little: and admonishest them, and speakest to them, concerning the things wherein they offend: that leaving their wickedness, they may believe in thee, O Lord.

God corrects those who err gently and gradually, admonishing them so that, forsaking wickedness, they may believe in Him.
