Where the surrounding world judged without mercy and feared the gods without hope, the book teaches God's people to judge others mindful of His goodness and to face judgment hoping in His mercy.

Therefore whereas thou chastisest us, thou scourgest our enemies very many ways, to the end that when we judge we may think on thy goodness: and when we are judged, we may hope for thy mercy.

God chastens His people gently so that, when they judge, they may remember His goodness, and when they are judged, hope for His mercy.
