Written for Jews amid Hellenistic paganism, the passage takes the very love of beauty prized in that world and redirects it: the loveliness of creation is real, but it is a road to the Creator, not a rival to Him.

For by the greatness of the beauty, and of the creature, the creator of them may be seen, so as to be known thereby.

The greatness and beauty of what is made allow the Creator to be perceived and, in a measure, truly known.
